Heart Imaging for Children: Pediatric Echocardiography Explained

When a child needs their heart checked, it's natural for parents to feel anxious. The reassuring news is that heart imaging for children is gentle, painless, and — something many families and even some physicians don't realize — available right here at Chatham Cardiac Care for children aged 8 and up.

What is a pediatric echocardiogram?

A pediatric echocardiogram is an ultrasound of a child's heart. Just like the version done for adults, it uses safe sound waves to create moving pictures of the heart. There are no needles, no radiation, and no pain involved. It's simply a way for the doctor to see how a young heart's chambers and valves are working.

Why a child might need one

A doctor may recommend a pediatric echo for many reasons — to check on a heart murmur, to follow up on symptoms like chest discomfort or palpitations, or to keep an eye on a known condition. In many cases, the test brings peace of mind by confirming that a child's heart is healthy.

What to expect

The test is done in a calm, comfortable setting. Your child will lie down while a technologist applies a little warm gel and gently moves a smooth handheld device across their chest to take pictures. It usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes. Bringing along a favourite comfort item or something to watch can help younger patients relax. Parents are there throughout to offer reassurance.

Close to home

Because pediatric echocardiography isn't widely available locally, families are often surprised and relieved to learn they don't need to travel to a big-city hospital. We offer it right here for children aged 8 and older, in a familiar, welcoming environment.
